We're Human Too! OP ED
Being a person with a Disability, people make a lot of assumptions. For example, I’ve been out to eat with my Family and the Waiter would ask my mom What will she have’’ as oppose to placing a Restaurant Menu in front of me allowing the decision to be mine. Mom and I had a conversation once she said to me You have three strikes against you your Black a Women and Disabled’’ My goal is to humanize this community and uplift us in a way that brings immense pride. The Disabled community has a lot to offer the world which is so easily discounted because of people’s ignorance as well as their lack of engagement with the community. I attended Thornwood High School, while there I took a Global Issues class my teacher told the class Go home read the article and We’ll talk about it tomorrow in class’’ The following day, my teacher asked the class Did anybody read the article? and I was able to provide context regarding the word amputation for my fellow classmates.
