We're Human Too! OP ED
Being a person with a Disability, people make a lot of assumptions. For example, I’ve been out to eat with my Family and the Waiter would ask my mom What will she have’’ as oppose to placing a Restaurant Menu in front of me allowing the decision to be mine.
Mom and I had a conversation once she said to me You have three strikes against you your Black a Women and Disabled’’
My goal is to humanize this community and uplift us in a way that brings immense pride.
The Disabled community has a lot to offer the world which is so easily discounted because of people’s ignorance as well as their lack of engagement with the community.
I attended Thornwood High School, while there I took a Global Issues class my teacher told the class Go home read the article and We’ll talk about it tomorrow in class’’
The following day, my teacher asked the class Did anybody read the article? and I was able to provide context regarding the word amputation for my fellow classmates.
One classmate, said Damn she knows what the hell she’s talking about’’
We all have a responsibility to continuously educate Ourselves so that we can evolve into who God has called us to be!
People with Disabilities have dreams and aspirations just like Everyone else. For example, I really desire to get Married one day as well as to have a Family of my own.
When I was younger, it was hard coming to terms with my Disability because I Wasn’t able to get up and go like my peers.
Today, I understand that I’m right where I’m supposed to be and also that there’s a significant call on my life!
It’s important for us to celebrate and acknowledge our differences while also seeking to find common ground.
I want the next generation of People with Disabilities to feel confident, empowered, loved, seen and inspired!
Representation is extremely important, in every community Therefore I’ll never stop using my God given Voice in pursuit of a long-lasting impact.
When we witness injustice of any kind, we have an obligation to speak up!
The Disabled community is full of vibrant intelligent individuals.
Make it a point to expose Yourself as well as engage with different groups of people.
I desire for the world to become familiar with this extraordinary community.
Words such as retart and slow are extremely offensive to this community because Everyone learns at their own pace. Some people are Visual learners, others may best learn Audibly.
One thing I really want to stress is despite our Disabilities we have dreams and ambitions just like Everyone else.
My encouragement for Everybody out there is never stop dreaming also, keep God first!
No matter what circumstances, we encounter Greater is He that’s in me than He that’s in the world.
Food for thought, what kind of world do we want the next Generation to inherit?
I personally, want the next Generation to inherit a world where love is the automatic default setting!
Our Father knows what we possess Therefore we have to trust him fully.
Never forget this truth, You’re not a mistake but instead a Gift with purpose.
Don’t dim your light for Anyone but be an example.
Spread love with each opportunity, you’re afforded to do so.
Life is short, so we must enjoy it.
God makes our crooked paths straight.
Nothing catches our God by surprise, everything happens for a reason.
The fact that we still have breath in our bodies is an indication that there’s more for us to do.
